Ed Black, who was being paid to watch my cabin, along with others in the Cedar Slope subdivision, reported a break-in at my cabin. He did not call me for some time to inform me of this. I was shocked because my cabin is quite a way down in the subdivision and furniture, valuables, and other large items were taken as well as tools and supplies for construction. The thief, or thieves, would have had to bring in a truck or have made several trips to carry off everything. I had never heard of any such crimes taking place.
When this happened I was focused on events in New York. My daughter, Morgan, who was raised by my parents in Springville, had been battered and threatened by her former boyfriend, John Fund. John had been a friend of mine, I thought, since we met in 1979 while active in the Libertarian Party.
When I made it back to look over what was gone it came to $10,000 in losses. Because the amount was small compared to other issues I was facing I did not pursue the theft, but I did not forget it happened.
2002 was a year fraught with shock for Americans. Remember the Bush White House claiming Saddam Hussein had Weapons of Mass Destruction? Of course, he had previously had them because we gave them to him. But in 2002 he was older. His wings had been clipped, so to speak.
